LYRICS

In the ocean there’s a mountain

On the mountain there’s a forest

In the forest…

In the forest there’s a garden
Gotta get in there

In the garden there’s a flower

Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry
Got to pluck it

In the flower there’s a nectar

Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry
Got to taste it

In the nectar there’s an answer
Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry
Got to know it

In the answer there’s another
And another and another
and another and another…

Slow down, slow down, slow down, slow down

Gotta get in there

In the ocean there’s a mountain

On the mountain there’s a forest

In the forest there’s a garden

In the garden there’s a flower

In the flower there’s a nectar
In the nectar there’s an answer
In that answer there’s another

And another and another

and another and another

Gotta get up there

Like it or not I’m coming up the mountain
Hurry, hurry… hurry… hurry…

A very tangential thought about the thread in the last Thread on Ukrainian/Russian language in Russia’s century’s-old attempts at colonization of the place where Rus originated. Bilingual households, I suspect, actually speak three languages: of course the two of the married couple/partners, but also a kind of pidgin that operates by combining vocab of both languages and shifting grammar as necessary. At least, that’s how it works in our house.

Something about Russians leaving their separatist ‘allies’ to fend for themselves leaves me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside…I could actually see the Donbas falling to Ukraine on or around the May 9 victory parade…

My older younger brother (as opposed to younger younger brother , who i”ll get to in a minute)has 2 daughters in Germany. The parents, with intent of raising bilingual daughters, each spoke their native language to the daughters, and both languages with each other. Once, having a disagreement, the mom said, ‘You just don’t understand’ (in German) to my brother, and the older daughter (at about age 5) said, ‘why don’t you try telling him in English?’

My younger younger brother has 2 daughters in Colombia. He noticed, when his younger daughter was 3 or 4, that she was using better grammar (in Spanish) than he was. He teaches at the college level, in Spanish.

That is very cool. My older child is making a real attempt at fluency in his mother’s language. The younger wants to master French. His understanding of mom is about 50% but he can’t speak at all. (Can’t talk right now about my wife’s attitudes toward speaking with the kids and language, but she has some regrets.)

So maybe 40 years ago my father-in-law (RIP) decided pavers would make a good parking spot in the backyard. So he bought about 3 dozen and plunked them down. Over the years they sunk in and got overgrown with crabgrass. To remove the crabgrass I had to dig them out. I’m a bit sore.

H. Walker’s only usefulness to Republican’s is that he an empty vessel into which pure propaganda can be poured. Any coherent thoughts of his own were likely crushed out of his skull in his early 20’s. He is clearly suffering from TBI and it is pretty much criminal that he is being used in this manner. But such is the ethical wasteland that is the GOP.

After years of criticism, Columbia University Medical Center has finally—quietly—cut public ties with celebrity doctor turned Republican Senate candidate Mehmet Oz.

The acclaimed teaching hospital, where Oz held senior positions like vice chair of surgery and director of integrated medicine for years, stripped his personal pages from their website in mid-January.

The move came a day after HuffPost reported on Jan. 12 that Columbia had established a new distance from Oz, changing his title to “professor emeritus.” The truth, however, was that Columbia had made that change years ago, as HuffPost later clarified in an updated version of its article.

But what HuffPost seemed to get wrong actually set off a chain of events, ironically, making the post right—albeit a day too early.

I called the MPR morning show to request this song during the Republican Convention in St. Paul in 2008 (McCain/Palin). They played it, but right after an artist I couldn’t stand so I had turned down the volume and missed it. I emailed them later and apparently they mentioned my name and made a joke about people coming to get me because of the song. I was listening to choppers day and night during the convention.

19th Century English Jurist Charles Bowen spent a lot of time reflecting upon the quote from Matthew 5:45 “and raineth upon the just and the unjust”.

Eventually, based upon his life and professional experience, he wrote his thoughts down:

“The rain it raineth on the just
And also on the unjust fella;
But chiefly on the just, because
The unjust hath the just’s umbrella.”

British Weather
- Gavin Ewart

It is the merry month of May,
when everything is cold and grey,
the rain is dripping from the trees
and life is like a long disease,

the storm clouds hover round like ghouls,
the birds all sing, because they’re fools,
and beds of optimistic flowers
are beaten down by thunder showers,

under a weak and watery sun
nothing seems to be much fun—
exciting as a piece of string,
this is the marvelous British Spring!

Happy Wallpurgis Night!
My wife told me of this holiday today - just had to share…
Walpurgis Night, a traditional holiday celebrated on April 30 in northern Europe and Scandinavia. In Sweden typical holiday activities include the singing of traditional spring folk songs and the lighting of bonfires. In Germany the holiday is celebrated by dressing in costumes, playing pranks on people, and creating loud noises meant to keep evil at bay. Many people also hang blessed sprigs of foliage from houses and barns to ward off evil spirits, or they leave pieces of bread spread with butter and honey, called ankenschnitt, as offerings for phantom hounds. Walpurgis Night is celebrated on Saturday, April 30, 2022.

When I was 4 years old, I flew with my parents to Hawaii. My parents let me behave like a little asshole during the flight (sorry!) but I distinctly remember getting scolded for screwing around with the ash trays built into the arm rests. These days I find it unfathomable that people used to smoke on airplanes.

Biden roasting Fox News is feel-good entertainment.

I’d like to see him also roast the mainstream media, e.g., with something skewering the idea that conservative white guys in rural diners are the only people worth interviewing about politics.

I think even back then there was at least a sense of “you probably shouldn’t” but it was a place where people were often nervous so no one thought it was “reasonable” to deny the way 1/2 of the population dealt*. Same with hospital waiting rooms.

*80% of men and 20% of women in 1960
1/3 the population in 1980
1/5 the population now (it was 22% in 2012, not sure exactly what now, but I heard around 20%)

I was just thinking that back through the 1970’s the smell of smoked tobacco and ashes was pretty much just an assumed part of the ambiance. By the ’90s when most folks stopped smoking in public spaces, that smell had disappeared. And you could tell who still smoked by the smell of cigarette smoke on their clothes and breath.

This seemed to me then, and still does, to be a lightening fast transformation.

Danny Masterson also has the Scientology Spetsnaz lawyer army going after everyone involved in the case including Leah Remini now. I really wish that particular organization could be RICOed. (sorry Popehat) He’s basically radioactive and should be.

So yeah I wasn’t expecting Steve Hyde to come back no matter how integral he ended up being at the end. It’s a shame he had to be such a scumbag.

I’ve seen several old guys get fired because they had no idea what was appropriate in the workplace these days. I wonder what he did.

“I did something I thought was funny and it wasn’t taken that way,” the 71-year-old actor said Saturday in an interview with CNBC. “The company, the movie studio, wanted to do the right thing, they wanted to check it all out, investigate it, and so they stopped the production.”

Murray said that he and the woman are “talking” and “trying to make peace with each other.”

The “Ghostbusters” star cited shifting cultural perceptions of what is and is not acceptable as part of what may have caused the problem.

“The world is different than it was when I was a little kid,” Murray said. “What I always thought was funny as a little kid isn’t necessarily the same as what’s funny now. Things change and the times change so it’s important for me to figure it out.”

Murray added, “I think it’s a sad dog that can’t learn anymore… I don’t want to be that sad dog and I have no intention of it.”

Before I went to Japan the first time in 2018, I was warned that there was a lot of smoking still going on. Turns out that was absolutely not the case. Yeah, people (mostly guys) smoked, but it was rare. Apparently there’d been some sort of sea change where smoking in public was seen as simply not really acceptable now. Kind of like how masks four years ago were a Nice To Do if you were sick or having allergies, but now it’s almost required.

That said, I was the only person in the Cox store this afternoon wearing a mask when I went down to swap out my old modem for a new one. Blargh.

Cuban, Musk.

One billionaire seems to have at least a tiny grasp of white male entitlement and at times exhibits an empathy for others.

The other billionaire is either too oblivious about white male entitlement, or more and more likely revels in it.

I’ll leave it to you to figure out who is who.
